PIPE BURSTING & SLIP LINING: In some circumstances, pipes cannot be lined. Sometimes pipe bursting is used, which involves the physical destruction and outward displacement of the old pipe followed simultaneously by the installation of a new pipe with the same or wider diameter inside the newly created void. We are one of the largest resources for trenchless pipe repair, repiping and relining services in Hawaii. Most people have never had to deal with pipelining because blocked drain problems only occur once in their lifetime. But cities and corporations have been Pipelining for over 40 years, and the same technology was introduced to small diameter pipe for home owners, condo owners, apartment buildings, shopping centers, small businesses and anyone else with pipe problems around 12 years ago. In Hawaii specifically, the technology arrived just a few years ago.

Rehabilitating Old Pipes In Hawaiian Buildings

In 2009 we received an emergency call from a very busy hotel in Honolulu about sewer pipe leaks in the walls of the hotel. Our video investigation showed longitudinal cracks in the vertical 6” cast iron sewer pipe that was installed in the 1960s. To excavate the walls and floors (to replace 100’ of 6” pipe and to re-plumb pipe connections) was estimated to take 3 weeks, during which the hotel rooms on all 10 stories would have no sewer service. The indirect cost of room vacancies was multiples that of the actual pipe replacement, estimated to be $200,000-$300,000.

The pipe lining solution: Fortunately modern pipe replacement is done by relining the inside of pipes using permanent pipe lining materials. Although relatively new to Hawaii, this specific hotel chain had rehabilitated several waste pipes this way on the mainland. First the pipe was cleaned with mechanical brushes to remove old scale and rust (normally the pipe would be cleaned by high-pressure water jetting, but the cracks would have leaked and cause severe damage.). The debris accumulating at the bottom of the pipe was removed during the process. Next the pipe was video inspected and the precise locations of the pipe connections market on the fiber optic video cable. Then a “liner” was prepared and saturated with 100% epoxy resin (has no odor). The liner with a special inflation tube inside of it was installed from the rooftop downwards for the entire 100’. After an 8-hour cure time, the the inflation balloon was removed and the new hardened liner was in place. Total pipe lining cost: $25,000. Job duration: 1 day

We can handle laterals anywhere from 2 to 8 inches and using the Permaliner inversion method can install liners in 22′s, 45′s and sweeping 90′s.

A distressed homeowner called our dispatch late one Sunday evening, surprised to find that someone answered the phone. She complained about repeat backups of her toilet and shower, spilling sewage all over her new wooden floors.

The Problem: Our sewer pipe video investigation showed her clay sewage pipes had severe offset joints (disconnected joints). The sharp edges of the joints were catching debris causing the backups. Excavation of all her floor would have meant removing and replacing the wooden floors throughout the house.

The solution: A new pipe liner was installed from her outside cleanout. The new continuous pipe had no connections and was as hard as new pipe. The offset joints were now “smooth slippery bumps” that offered no edges for anything to catch on.
