SEWER DRAIN PIPE LINING: Are your sewer pipes backing up from root infestation, or from missing pipe floors or broken sewer pipes? Are your apartment roof rain leader drains leaking into walls of condominiums? Modern structural pipe replacement installs a new pipe inside of the old pipe. It only takes 3 hours, has a 50 year warranty and is as strong as repiping with new pipe. The internal diameter is only reduced by 5%. We only need one entry point to install the new pipe liner, usually from a rooftop or a small access hole dug outside the building. Compared to old-fashioned excavation, this new inner pipe is cheaper, faster and cleaner. Click Pipe Lining to learn more.
EPOXY PIPE LINING: Boston, due to it’s thousands of miles of deteriorating water pipe infrastructure, is especially prone to pinhole leaks in corroded or damaged pipes creating slab leaks and it’s leaking galvanized pipes cause water damage and lead leaching into drinking water. Large and small diameter epoxy pipe rehabilitation coats the inside of any pipes with EPA approved food-grade epoxy which permanently seals all leaks. The epoxy coating is applied in varying thicknesses, depending on if it is used in oil refineries, hospitals, hotels, home, factories, aircraft carriers, water pipelines and apartment high-rises. PIPE BURSTING & SLIP LINING: In some circumstances, pipes cannot be lined so “pipe bursting” is used, which involves the physical destruction and outward displacement of the old pipe followed simultaneously by the installation of a new pipe with the same or wider diameter inside the newly created void. In other cases, a new pipe can simply be pulled into the old pipe (“slip lining”), thereby reducing the internal diameter somewhat. Click Pipe Bursting / Slip Lining to learn more.

Welcome
Our Boston MA trenchless pipe lining company is the only Massachusetts pipe replacement contractor that offers a complete array of pipe rehabilitation techniques for residential, commercial, city and industrial applications. Hospitals for example will use Cured-In-Place pipe (CIPP) to rehabilitate their vertical leaking rain drain stacks and leaking sewage pipes, and high-rise apartments would use our epoxy pipe lining process to stop pinhole leaks and slab leaks in their copper water pipes. Cities use our sectional repairs to stop root infiltration at separated clay pipe joints and they use our manhole rehabilitation techniques to stop water infiltration and water exfiltration.
Our modern pipe lining techniques allow the trenchless pipe restoration of broken pipes or cracked sewer pipes without excavating floors, walls, driveways, foundations, basements and concrete slabs. This no-dig method of pipe repair is cleaner, cheaper and faster than excavation and repiping of damaged plumbing in Boston.
Our Permaliner brand pipe liners have a 100-year life expectancy and come with a 50-year warranty. The pipe liners are installed from one access point, like a rooftop or from an outside cleanout so that there is no invasion of living space or workspace. Although underground pipe lining has been around for over 35 years, small diameter CIPP pipe lining was pioneered by Perma-Liner manufacturing. We are an experienced certified Perma-Liner installer and contractor with extensive experience in high-rise apartment CIPP trenchless pipe replacement, sewer main line lining, industrial pipelining, manhole liners and manhole epoxy lining and residential sewer lateral lining in Boston MA.
The Structural Pipe Lining Installation Process
- The pipe lining contractor uses a water jetter or mechanical pipe cleaning brushes, remove all scale and corrosion deposits causing drain pipe backups in your broken underground sewer pipes
- Then the pipe lining company uses a video camera to inspect the sewer plumbing pipes and gets a distance measurement for the trenchless underground pipelining
- The pipe liner is cut to length and 100% epoxy resin is mixed and used to saturate the pipe sleeve thoroughly
- The new liner is installed and the epoxy resin saturated pipe liner is allowed to harden under air pressure against the walls of the broken leaking pipe that needs replacement
- After 3 hours the new pipe liner has formed a new inner pipe inside the old pipe and the trenchless pipe process is complete
Featured Project: Residential Sewer Pipe Restoration
Location: Pinckney St., Boston, Massachusetts (MD)
Problem: Sewer pipes leaking in walls of two-story home when toilets are flushed
Diagnosis: Vertical sewer pipes were rusted and had longitudinal cracks
Craftsman’s Boston dispatch was contacted by a distraught homeowner on Pinckney St. Apparently the walls in the house were getting wet when the upstairs toilets were flushed. The homeowner was concerned about mould remediation and sanitary issues, so they contacted a plumber. The plumber recommended replacing the sewer pipes by digging up all the walls, floors and ceilings to install new drain pipe. The house was over 150 years old with significant historic value, so trenching was not an option.
Craftsman pipe lining performed a video inspection of all the plumbing and started the pipelining work the same week. First the top floor pipes were cleaned, and then the vertical sewer pipes were relined using toilet as an access point. The bottom floor drain pipes were rehabilitated using in a similar manner. After every pipe liner installation, a pipe video inspection was performed and the connecting drain pipes were checked for proper flow.
The bathtub drain pipes were re-lined from the tub drain itself, using the “orientational pipe rehabilitation” pioneered by Craftsman pipe lining. This method can orient a pipe liner that has pipe connections pre-cut (like for the bathtub overflow pipe connection) so that pipe connections are no covered up during the cured-in-place pipe lining process.
The 4” cast iron drain pipes under the house were rehabilitated from outside the house at the cleanout, and sewer lateral (pipe going to road where it connects with the sewer main line) was also relined from the cleanout.
The pipe relining project completed in 4 days saved the homeowner over $120,000 and preserved the historic value of the interior of the home.
Recent Project in Massachusetts:
Underground pipe restoration at a bank in the financial district on Pearl St., Boston, MA
Type: pipe lining of sewage drain line under bank
Problem: a 6” sewer main line running directly under a bank had cracked and was collapsing in areas causing toilet backups
Diagnosis: a very old drain pipe had corroded along its top due to H2S (hydrogen sulphide) gasses from sewage decomposition
Craftsman Pipe Lining has learned over the years that some pipes deteriorate along the top of the old pipe when corrosive gasses accumulate and form an acidic solution (sulphuric acid) that can dissolve the alkaline clay VCP pipes. The end result is a paper thin pipe rooftop that eventually collapses under the weight of the upper materials.
Due to security concerns, trenching under the bank to replace the pipe was not an option and going through the marble floors would be too costly in materials and services downtime. Fortunately for this customer, the old pipeline was still in sufficiently good condition to be cleaned and relined using Perma-Liner technology. Permaliner is the only equipment manufacturer offering air inversion pipe re-lining that only needs one access point for the pipeliner installation.
Over a weekend, Craftsman opened a small 2’x3’ section of the walkway outside the building to gain access to the elusive pipe. From there they opened the pipe, cleaned it, video inspected the pipeline to get distance measurements, and installed a 78’ pipe liner in the 6” pipe. None of the connections were covered up in the process, and after a 3 hour cure time, the new pipe liner was ready to be put back into service.
Advantages of Trenchless Pipe Rehabilitation
- Speed: cured in place pipe lining takes hours not weeks
- Cost: since no walls, basements, floors, driveways and landscaping is destroyed, trenchless pipe repair is cheaper than digging and replacing pipe
- Cleanliness: No pipe repair excavation mess inside apartments, factories, hospitals and commercial buildings
- No downtime costs: restaurant pipe rehab and CIPP in other commercial facilities allows the continued operation and no economic loss
